Ander Crenshaw Sells Out Taxpayers
Folds to Banking Lobby Pressure with his Vote on Bailout Bill
In this, the most dire economic situation this country has faced since the great depression, it is important to note that Rep. Crenshaw has chosen again to follow rather than lead by voting for a flawed emergency economic stimulus package. This bill stimulated nothing but continued irresponsibility.
“The truth is, this bill would have further jeopardized the financial security of many Americans right here in District 4,” said Jay McGovern. Some points to make about this bill that the public may not know. The bill:
- Offered no corrective action to the regulatory environment that facilitated the economic meltdown.
- Lacked penalties, fines or imprisonment for executives who steal investor or taxpayer money.
- Had no enforcement provision for the oversight group to monitor spending the $700 billion.
- Would not have stopped ONE foreclosure or facilitated re-negotiation of questionable loans.
- Had NO protection for taxpayers anywhere in the entire piece of legislation, using words like "suggested" when referring to the government being paid back for the bailout.
It's time for a reality check. The people who put us in this situation are the same ones telling us we have no choice but to hold our noses and feed the beast. Crenshaw has taken over $620,000 from various banking and finance special interests.
“I don't trust the people who got us into this mess negotiating on our behalf. Neither do I trust those in either party who would act fearfully rather than lead responsibly. Common sense says we should take a moment and make sure the package we do pass will fix the root problem and address the needs of all our communities. I would not vote for a bill that did not adequately address oversight, mortgage assistance, and accountability of those in whom we put our financial faith. This administration has systematically privatized gain and expects to socialize risk, the proposed bill would have this practice continue; the taxpayers cannot allow this reckless behavior to continue,” McGovern said Tuesday afternoon.
“We need real leadership in Congress, not Crenshaw, who has voted with George Bush over 94% of the time and given financial speculators free reign with our future. We need leadership that provides real solutions. Crenshaw has done nothing for the average American when his party controlled Congress and now he wants to pass the buck. His response to why he leapt before looking is to blame others. If Crenshaw was my financial advisor and he behaved this way, I'd have fired him by now. In truth, he is our advisor. His responsibility to this district is to watch over the spending of the people's money. The only reason Crenshaw has come back to town to explain himself is because I am running against him. We need real action and legitimate interest in the needs of our constituents. Frankly, if Crenshaw wants to plead his case to the people of North Florida and District 4, he should stop hiding behind his mass emails and websites and debate me.”
